Salary and Benefits Overview

2010-2011 Stipends
PGY 1: $48,000
PGY 2: $49,000
PGY 3: $50,154

Convenient payroll savings and direct deposit of salary are available through many local financial institutions.

Educational Allowance
All residents are provided an annual allowance for conference attendance and/or the purchase of educational materials, electronic resources, etc. Educational allowances are:

PGY 1: $100
PGY 2: $300
PGY 3: $400

In addition, since the Program requires each resident to have a handheld device, he/she will be reimbursed up to a maximum of $150 towards such purchase once during the three year residency.

Meal Allowance
Lunch is provided weekdays during Noon Conference. House officers may purchase food and beverages in the Hospital cafeteria at a reduced employee rate. Meal coupons are provided for nights on-call.

Vacation
Interns receive 4 weeks of vacation.

Sick Pay Benefits
Residents are granted up to four days sick leave with full pay without a qualifying period. For extended illness, disability is paid under New York State guidelines.

Short-Term Disability Insurance (including Maternity Leave)
Unity's short-term disability plan, which includes maternity disability, continues pay for a resident who has a disability which is not job-related.

Long-Term Disability Insurance (2 levels of coverage)
Coverage effective on the first month concurrent with or following date of hire. This benefit becomes effective after six months of disability. The cost of 60% of the benefit is paid by the system. Employee may pay additional for 70% of the benefit.

Medical Insurance
Housestaff and their immediate families are provided with the opportunity to join one of the two medical insurance plans. The Hospital contributes a portion of the cost of the premiums. The house officer's portion of the premium will be deducted from their pay on a pre-tax basis, thus reducing taxable income and increasing take home pay.

Dental Insurance
Housestaff are eligible to select from two levels of dental coverage for themselves and their immediate family members. The Hospital contributes a portion of the cost of the premiums. The house officer's portion of the premium will be deducted from their pay on a pre-tax basis, thus reducing taxable income and increasing take home pay.

Life Insurance
Unity provides employees with free basic life insurance coverage in an amount equal to the employee's annual salary.

Professional Liability Insurance
Professional liability insurance is provided by Unity Health System for all residents. This benefit provides coverage for clinical rotations that are part of your residency training.

Retirement Plan
Employees are eligible to participate in Unity's 403(b) plan. This is an easy way to save for retirement using pre-tax income that is directly deducted from one's paycheck.

On-Site Child Care
Child care programs are offered for children between the ages of eight weeks to pre-school, and a before and after-school program is available to serve employees and the community. Preferential consideration is given to Health System employees based upon availability; these employees receive a discounted rate.

Housing
Many attractive housing opportunities are available in Rochester . While the Unity Health System Residency Program cannot offer housing directly, we provide residents with information on local apartments and real estate offices.
