About the Residency Program
We at Unity Health System dedicate ourselves to excellence in all aspects of Internal Medicine training. In this era of great advancement in medicine and technology, our society demands that the internist be both an expert in the care of the acutely ill adult and a master of the office setting, implementing the strategies that maintain health and prevent disease. In our residency program, we assure each trainee's competence in:
- Patient care
- Medical knowledge
- Practice-based learning and improvement, including:
- the critical appraisal of the core articles and texts in General Internal Medicine
- quality assessment and improvement skills
- Interpersonal and communication skills
- The delivery of care that is professional and humanistic and recognizes the value of each person
- The optimal utilization of health care resources and information technology
Excellence in medical education, combined with an emphasis on compassion, has always been the centerpiece of our training – first at St. Mary’s Hospital and now through Unity Health System’s Internal Medicine Residency Program at Unity Hospital. For well over 100 years, we have helped shape thousands of dedicated medical professionals who serve our local community and communities around the world. In the last five years alone, our graduates have gone on fellowships at major academic medical centers in such fields as Cardiology, Infectious Disease, Gastroenterology, Hematology/Oncology, Endocrinology, and Pulmonary/Critical Care. Our teaching faculty continues to grow, with recent additions in cardiology, neurology, pulmonary and critical care, and endocrinology. Our facilities and services are growing right along with our reputation. In addition to new Critical Care and Emergency Departments, Unity built a new Department of Medicine Education Center in 2006, which includes a new medical library and conference facilities. This expansion will continue to enhance the skill of our residents by providing state-of-the art clinical technology and training resources within a centralized teaching facility.
